Why does Reefer madness still exist?

BB's take: Doesn't anyone else find it odd that so many seniors who smoked pot by the bushels in the 60's and 70's are now returning to it for medicinal and/or also "recreational" use (which is a way of saying they smoke it to relax or sleep better)? AFAIK, none of these people are currently against its use.

The naysayers are those who have never really indulged in it other than a toke after getting drunk in their teens or attending HS/college parties? The issue has become septic to Republicans because the Democrats are voting for it. This automatically demonizes it to many Conservatives. Add in religious folks who are against it along with alcohol and tobacco and you have a block of resistance that is unjustified.

Education is key here. Please look into it for yourself and forget what you have been fed. Hemp and marijuana were considered the same by our government until recently. The next step is to decriminalize the plant so it can be openly researched. Heck, it might cure the very health problem you are struggling against and in most cases you won't even feel it in your system. It might stop the pain you live with even when taking your prescription opioids.

Dr. Oz claims in the States that have legalized it, there has been a 25% decrease in opioid deaths.

LM: Wow!

Joseph Dykehouse: Here in Michigan it is legalized. I work the all nighter and often need help to go to sleep. I used to take some benedryl..no more. Nausea is cured..pain from arthritis in my knee when its 10 below is reduced. Do I get a little high, sure. I dont see what the problem is. Do people not drink a glass of wine after dinner? Do people not have a few drinks recreationally? It comes from the ground. Its not made in a chemical lab. Its about responsibility just like anything else. You have to be responsible with food. Furthermore if you look at prohibition in the 30's who benefited from it...the gangsters. Who benefits from it being illegal..the drug runners. Every time you run to a pharmacy to pick up your prescription you are putting something foreign in your body to cure something or prevent something. I really think people need to be more open minded about this. If you just flat out disagree with it I get it. But I am a law biding working, father of two citizen and it improves the quality of my life.

Jerry Jones: Amen Bert! Totally agree. Good observation on why conservatives resist marijuana law reform. Folks, “Reefer Madness” is not a documentary!

Shirley D: The biggest resistance is the pharmaceutical companies who have the money to fight it! They know it is beneficial to many medical conditions that they cannot compete with, and once it’s legalized they cannot control it, or make money from it for themselves! What is best for the patient is not their priority!

Danny M:
I smoked recreationally .. back in the day .. I’ve seen waaay to much research on the benefits of cannabis to be against its use in any way ... recreational or therapeutic...

James B: Agree or disagree with it's use, the lack of significant externalizations means the government should stay out of it. Religious beliefs especially mean the government should stay out of it.

Sarah G: Smoking anything is hard on your lungs, period! Everything in moderation, but honestly anything interfering with intake of O2 & outtake of CO2 can inhibit homeostasis. This does not apply to other ways of using cannabis...ie oil, ingestion, etc. My worry with your pro marijuana post is young people damaging organs..... brain cells during important developmental periods. Also to clarify I am NOT against the legalization of marijuana to some degree, and I absolutely know alcohol is much more damaging to the body but it would be irresponsible to suggest cannabis is the “perfect drug” and hide its’ negative effects.

I'm amazed, I have to admit. Seldom do I come across a blog that's both educative and entertaining,
and without a doubt, you have hit the nail on the head.
The issue is something which not enough men and women are speaking intelligently about.

Now i'm very happy I stumbled across this during my search for something concerning
this.

Can I simply say what a comfort to discover somebody that genuinely knows what
they're talking about on the internet. You certainly realize how to bring an issue to
light and make it important. More people need to
read this and understand this side of the story.
I can't believe you aren't more popular given that you definitely have the gift.

I have been browsing online greater than 3 hours as of late,
but I never found any fascinating article like yours. It is pretty price enough for me.
In my opinion, if all webmasters and bloggers made good content material as you probably did, the internet will likely be a lot more helpful than ever before.
