If you could make major changes in how our public
schools educate our kids, what direction would you take? I'll go first:
1.
Aptitude tests every 3 years (3rd, 6th, & 9th grade) with counselors
helping the children recognize their strengths.
2. No
more state testing as is currently in place.
3. Reading, writing, and
arithmetic heavily stressed first, followed by science, history, &
geography.
4.
Wood/metal/drafting classes & Home economics for both sexes as mandatory.
5. Turn
one of our 3 high schools into a full fledged vocational/technical school with
first rate instructors. Students will graduate as 1st class apprentice/entry
level journeymen/women in whatever discipline they chose with OJT work programs
taking up the 2nd half of the school day.
6. Institute community service for infractions over fining
the parents (fist-fights, etc).
7. Extend recess in grade schools for over-active children
instead of punishments and color-coded behavior reports.
8. Schools could become
competitive based on what disciplines they offer.
Note: I realize these suggestions might not be doable, but I
would like folks to explain why they are not and what they would do to make our
schools better.

Brandon Prewitt: Graduate High School at 16. Graduate at 18 with a trade cert.
2 yrs of college for a degree. And, everything else you said.
James Baker: 100% school choice with tax dollars following the student.
Jenae F: Yes! All of them! And I’m a teacher so I should know!! My husband is the principal at Lee High School and they have the STEM academy but I agree, there definitely should be more ways students can get qualified/certified to go right into the work field out of high school. State testing needs to go, aptitude tests need to be in place and definitely more recess! Can I add in parenting classes? I would love to teach parents how to have structure in the home and how to teach kids how to work!!
Shirley D: Go back to the way we were taught, quit teaching to the test! Back to reading as homework, repetition taught memorization, and retention, penmanship teach them to properly hold a pen (not with their knuckles).
Hello there, I do think your website could be having browser
compatibility issues. Whenever I take a look at
your website in Safari, it looks fine but when opening
in IE, it has some overlapping issues. I merely wanted
to give you a quick heads up! Aside from that,
great website!
Barbora C: Amen!!
Ray C: Two weeks of boot camp @ Paris Island SC. before they receive their diploma.
Joseph B: Bert Man spot on. The fastest code should be wrote in light as in light ray, at the speed of light, not just electricity as present computer is limited by electrical components however tiny are still slow.
Jennifer B: These are ALL great ideas Bert! #listenupgccisd
